    Understanding RMDs

What are RMDs? Required Minimum Distributions are mandatory annual withdrawals from tax-deferred retirement accounts like Traditional IRAs and 401(k)s starting at a certain age.

SECURE 2.0 Act Changes: The RMD starting age increased to 73 for those born 1951-1959, and will increase to 75 for those born 1960 or later.

Roth IRAs: Unlike Traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs are NOT subject to RMDs during the owner's lifetime. However, Roth 401(k)s were subject to RMDs until 2024, when SECURE 2.0 eliminated this requirement.

Aggregation Rules: You can take your total IRA RMD from any combination of your Traditional IRAs. However, 401(k) RMDs must be taken from each 401(k) separately.

This calculator uses the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table for estimates. If your spouse is more than 10 years younger and is the sole beneficiary, the Joint Life Expectancy Table may provide a smaller RMD. Consult a tax professional for personalized advice.
