    What is TDEE?

Total Daily Energy Expenditure represents the total calories your body burns in a day, including all activities from breathing to exercise.

    The Components of TDEE

BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate): Calories burned at complete rest (60-70% of TDEE)

TEF (Thermic Effect of Food): Calories burned digesting food (10% of TDEE)

NEAT (Non-Exercise Activity): Daily movements like walking, fidgeting (15-20%)

EAT (Exercise Activity): Intentional exercise (5-10%)

    Calculating Your TDEE

The most common method uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation for BMR, then multiplies by an activity factor:

  1. Sedentary: BMR × 1.2
  2. Light Activity: BMR × 1.375
  3. Moderate Activity: BMR × 1.55
  4. Very Active: BMR × 1.725
  5. Extremely Active: BMR × 1.9

  6. Using TDEE for Goals

Weight Loss: Eat 300-500 calories below TDEE

    Maintenance: Eat at TDEE

Muscle Gain: Eat 200-300 calories above TDEE

    Common Mistakes

Overestimating activity level is the #1 error. Be honest about your daily movement. Track for 2 weeks before making conclusions.
