    Measures of Central Tendency


    Understanding where data "centers" is fundamental to statistics.


    Mean (Average)


    Add all values and divide by the count.


    Example: Dataset: 4, 7, 9, 12, 18

    Mean = (4+7+9+12+18) ÷ 5 = 50 ÷ 5 = 10


    Median (Middle Value)


    The middle value when data is ordered. For even counts, average the two middle values.


    Example: Dataset: 4, 7, 9, 12, 18

    Median = 9 (the middle value)


    Mode (Most Frequent)


    The value that appears most often.


    Example: Dataset: 4, 7, 7, 9, 12

    Mode = 7


    Standard Deviation


    Measures how spread out data is from the mean.


    Steps:

    1. Calculate the mean

    2. Subtract mean from each value and square

    3. Average the squared differences

    4. Take the square root


    When to Use Each Measure


  1. Mean: Normally distributed data without outliers
  2. Median: Skewed data or data with outliers
  3. Mode: Categorical data or finding most common value
