    Scientific notation might look intimidating at first, but it's simply a shorthand way to write very large or very small numbers. Once you understand the pattern, it becomes second nature.

    What is Scientific Notation?

    Scientific notation expresses numbers as a product of two factors: a decimal number between 1 and 10, and a power of 10. The general format is:

    a × 10n

    where a is between 1 and 10, and n is an integer

    Why Use Scientific Notation?

    • Simplifies very large numbers: Writing 93,000,000 miles as 9.3 × 107 miles
    • Handles very small numbers: 0.00000000167 grams becomes 1.67 × 10-9 grams
    • Makes calculations easier: Multiplying and dividing is simpler with powers of 10
    • Shows significant figures clearly: Precision is immediately visible

    Converting to Scientific Notation

    Large Numbers (Positive Exponents)

    Example: 45,000

    1. 1. Move decimal left until you have a number between 1-10: 4.5
    2. 2. Count how many places you moved: 4 places
    3. 3. Write as: 4.5 × 104

    Example: 7,500,000,000

    2. 2. Moved 9 places left

    Small Numbers (Negative Exponents)

    Example: 0.0032

    1. 1. Move decimal right until you have a number between 1-10: 3.2
    2. 2. Count how many places you moved: 3 places
    3. 3. Write as: 3.2 × 10-3

    Example: 0.000000891

    1. 1. Decimal position: 8.91
    2. 2. Moved 7 places right
    3. 3. Result: 8.91 × 10-7

    Operations with Scientific Notation

    Multiplication

    Multiply the coefficients, add the exponents:

    (3 × 104) × (2 × 105)

    = (3 × 2) × 10(4+5)

    = 6 × 109

    Division

    Divide the coefficients, subtract the exponents:

    (8 × 106) ÷ (4 × 102)

    = (8 ÷ 4) × 10(6-2)

    = 2 × 104

    Common Mistakes to Avoid

    ❌ Wrong coefficient range

    25 × 103 should be 2.5 × 104

    ❌ Confusing positive/negative exponents

    Large numbers need positive exponents, small numbers need negative

    ❌ Forgetting to adjust after operations

    Always ensure final answer has coefficient between 1-10
